A Cochlear Implant Surgery can bring about massive positive change in the life of a congenitally deaf child. SMVDNSH is the only Hospital in the entire UT where Cochlear Implant Surgeries are regularly performed; with the majority of the past surgeries having been sponsored by the Shrine Board, in keeping with its philanthropic approach to the society.
As yet another clinical feat, a few days back, the ENT Department of SMVDNSH performed 3 more successful Cochlear Implant Surgeries, which too were sponsored by the Board. The beneficiaries were young children aged 4-6 years having profound hearing loss and since they couldn’t hear, they weren’t able to speak either. Notably, all beneficiaries were from a very poor background.

Parents of the beneficiaries expressed their vehement gratitude to the Board / Hospital stating that they had lost all hopes of their ward ever getting this expensive surgery. They also indebted the Board to come at their rescue as their wards now usher to the world of sounds.
The surgeries in reference were performed by the ENT team led by Dr. Rohan Gupta (Consultant ENT) with the support of anaesthesia team led by Dr. Pankaj Gupta (HOD Anaesthesia) and overall guidance rendered by Dr. Sunil Kotwal (Consultant ENT). The post-operative management till discharge of children was taken care of by the Pediatric team led by Dr. Anand Yelne (Consultant).
At the time of discharge of beneficiaries, Dr. Rohan shared that surgeries performed by him were immensely successful with absolutely no clinical complication and that the beneficiaries are being discharged in good condition. He once again reiterated his often pronounced advice that identifying impaired hearing at a young age and thereafter timely surgical intervention can transform the life of a child by preventing development of a handicap later, if the child is left unattended.
Dr. Gopal Sharma, Chief administrative Officer, SMVDNSH revealed on the occasion that management of the Board led by a very dynamic and proactive CEO has always done exceedingly well when it comes to reaching out to the poor and needy patients in need of financial support.
He added that the instant surgeries are merely one illustration of the numerous philanthropic steps taken from time to time by the Board, for the well being of society. Sh. M M Mathavan, Facility Director of SMVDNSH also applauded the Board’s approach of always supporting and substantiating the actions of the Hospital to render useful services to the society, with a humanitarian dimension.
